New year and new e-vignette purchase. We are going to show the most important changes that will be valid in Hungary from January 1, 2023 in connection with the highway sticker.
In the case of passenger cars (price category D1), the price of the monthly sticker became 8,900 HUF, which was previously 5,210 HUF and the sticker valid for 10 days increased to 5,500 HUF from the previous 3,820 HUF.
What are the most important things to know in 2023 after price changes?
Buying the motorway sticker
Hungarian toll roads (all kinds of motorways) can only be used in possession of a valid motorway sticker.
The e-vignette must be purchased before entering the toll road section, but no later than 60 minutes after (60-minute rule).
Penalties also became more expensive in 2023
This year, not only highway stickers but also fines have become more expensive. In the case of using toll roads without stickers in the D1 category, for example, for payment within 60 days, the penalty increased to 18,750 HUF, and beyond that to 74,970 HUF. In 2022, this was 16,220 HUF and 64,850 HUF. The penalty can also be redeemed after the payment notice by purchasing the annual national sticker afterwards.
Our advice:
Those who generally buy for shorter periods should also consider purchasing the annual entitlement: in 2023, the value of 9 10-day stickers is the same as the price of the annual entitlement.
Types of the e-vignettes
National 10 days: starting day + 9 consecutive days(valid for the whole country).
National monthly: from the starting day until the 24th hour of the same day of the following month (in terms of number)/24h on the last day of the month.
Regional yearly: can be used from the first day of the current year/from the date of purchase in the current year until midnight on January 31 of the following year.
National yearly: They can be used on the tolled expressway network of the given county from the first day of the current year/from the date of purchase in the current year until midnight on January 31 of the following year.
TIP: In all cases, we must check the license plate number and the type of highway sticker, as we are required to pay a surcharge in the case of an e-sticker exchanged with incorrect data!
