To render the kick off of the New Year easier for all drivers, we have collected the most important changes in highway stickers and usage in Hungary in 2019. As of January 2019 the scope of tariff bound roads has been expanded by two new speedway and highway sections inaugurated in 2018. The length of the tariff bound road network has thus been increased from the former 1356 km to nearly 1380 km in the e-sticker system.
The new tariff bound road sections in 2019 are:
Highway M35 (the 18.7 km section between main road No. 481 and Berettyóújfalu)
Highway M4 (Berettyóújfalu – Main Road No. 47, 3.7 km)

Changes in rules for combined vehicles
Several amendments have been introduced in the e-sticker system in the regulation related to trailers.
An important innovation is that permission for trailers (U tariff category) can also be purchased for vehicles that belong to the D2 or B2 tariff category (in addition to the D2 or B2 permission) from the beginning of 2019. This provision makes drivers’ life easier as they can carry any type of trailer with the help of a U tariff category e-sticker purchased for their trailer.
The other part of the changes concerns the amount of surcharges that can be imposed on unauthorized road use of vehicle combinations and the scope of those who are compelled to pay it. According to the new regulation, if neither the truck of the set of vehicles that belongs to tariff category D2 or B2 nor the trailer (U category) has the right to use the road, then, in deviation from the practice followed so far, instead of two only one surcharge payment obligation will emerge and be payable by the operator or owner of the truck. The operator or the owner will be obliged to pay the surcharge imposed even in the event the towing vehicle has, but the trailer does not have the right to use the road.
In line with the above slight amendments have been introduced in the part of the tariff decree that regulates the size of the surcharge and its margin.

And to conclude take a piece of advice: When purchasing a highway sticker, make double sure you have the correct plate number and tariff category, as you may be required to pay a surcharge if the sticker is purchased using wrong data!
