What to do if your vehicle breaks down on the highway? How to be followers of rule in this case?

It could happen to anyone that the vehicle stops along the way due to some technical reason. In this situation the first thing we should do is to pull over on the emergency lane and place in a visible place the warning triangle and, if possible, turn on the vehicle’s  hazard warning.

If we are stucked at night, to avoid accidents is very important to not sit in an unlit car! If you get out of the vehicle definitely wear the visibility vest! It is advisable to store it in the glove compartment or in the pocket on the back of the seats and do not store it in the luggage compartment. (If you are traveling alone, then the back of the right front seat is one of the most easily accessible place for the vest.)

If you  get out from the car, please wait outside of the crash barriers, preferably far enough away from the vehicle and the road. Pay particular attention to children!

If you deliver animal, then you had better leave it in the vehicle. Or make sure that the animal is also in safe, and will not be running out to the road. (Next to the motorway there is extreme noise that can scare the animals!)

Upon completion of the above-mentioned measures definitely call for help!

This can be done in several ways:

  • by using the emergency station on the Hungarian highway (orange S.O.S column - spread abroad aswell);
  • in severe cases, dial the 112 emergency phone number, also from abroad;
    by calling the insurance company (in case of assistance service);
  • by calling directly the breakdown service;
  • by calling a friend who can help us;

Good to know that by dialing the 112 emergency phone number or  when you call from the emergerncy telephone located on the highways, a central dispatcher answers the phone who can send help immediately. The 112 emergency number is important to call only in very serious cases where we feel that the damaged vehicle is a direct threat to our transport participants (for example, if we are stucked in the traffic lane). It is important to communicate the exact location and the number of persons traveling in the vehicle. When using the emergency station on the road it is easier  as in this case, the dispatcher has to know the exact check-in location. This latter solution will greatly help us abroad, such as overcoming language barriers when making the announcement, as the dispatcher can send to the scene the road inspector or  the police even if we fail to adequately explain the problem. After their arrival, and visual inspection, they will be able to call the breakdown service, usually they are in contract with specialized firms who can ship the car to the location or the nearest service center for us. Vehicles will not get fixed by a home delivery, so it is important we consider that in case of a long-distance transport can be useful to repair on site, since the cost of transportation of these cases may exceed the repair costs of the car.

During contracting with an insurance company, especially if it is connected to a foreign trip, make sure about the exact services provided by the insurance company in case of malfunction of our vehicle inland and abroad.

But besides all these the most important is that if you get stuck along the way, do not panic! Try to be visible and for your safety, call for help.
