Vehicle categories – in human language, presented with examples

According to the Hungarian expressway roads vehicles are classified into five categories for size and weight. The payment of the toll gates had stopped, ourdays it is verified on the license plate.

It is often a question of hesitant car drivers that they do not know for sure which vignette should they  purchase  D1 or D2? Or what to do, what vignette to purchase, if they enter with a passenger car trailer or a small truck? That is why it is important for us to make clear all details of individual vehicle categories, exactly what to look for and how to correct the vehicle category must be clearly chosen - because after a bad motorway sticker purchased no one wants to pay a penalty.

In order to avoid punishment and unauthorized toll we have collected the most controversial and the most common items in question.

The exact description of category D1: „Motorcycles and automobiles for up to 7 persons including the driver and with a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tons, and their trailers.” However, if you have a trailer towed by car, it is not entirely clear the extent of this category.

On toll road sections of trailers for the use of the road D2 and B2 categories has to be paid separately. The U category in each case must be purchased for trailer’s license plate number.

If the car is a passenger car (ie encoding stated in the registration as "J", M1 and M1G), and the car is capable of carrying up to seven people, you do not have to take separate motorway sticker for the trailer.

• By car, I pull on a trailer another car. In this case, it is only necessary for passenger car to buy a D1 sticker. The trailer doesn’t need sticker, and even the car trailed with or without license plate, this vehicle certainly do not have to buy vignette.
  
  
• By car, I pull horse trailer with two horses. Only the passanger car needs D1 sticker, the horse transport trailer does not.
  
  
• But if I pull with a passanger car examined as truck a horsebox, also the special horse transporter needs a sticker. In other words, is necessary a U vignette and a D2 vignette aswell.
  
  
• If I pull a horse trailer with a car capable of carrying more then seven-person, I need to buy a vehicle sticker D2, and for the horse transporter a U sticker.
  
  
• A little Ford Fiesta for 2 persons, that is separated from the rear cargo compartment with grille and it is examined as small lorries, is pulling an empty trailer, then you must buy sticker! In other words, the car must purchase D2 sticker, and a U sticker on the trailer.

Also a common mistake is that the smaller 15-seater bus operators are not aware that vehicles are in category B2 and wrongly buy vignette for D1 or D2 category.

• If a bus is pulling a trailer, you need to buy B2 and U category permissions as well.
  
  
• If the trailer is pulled by a minibus for 9 persons, then a D2 vignette is necessary for the minibus and category U for the trailer.
